Three times we hear in today’s Gospel passage “and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.” In Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18 (or 21), Jesus says this to his disciples after giving three sets of instructions: to give alms, pray, and fast. He says be careful not to do these things in a showy way so that others may know, but rather privately, so as to exist only between you and God. These three principles guide Christians throughout Lent to experience a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God. Starting today, allow yourself to encounter these simple desires of Jesus and see how you might give to others (almsgiving), give to God (pray), and give of yourself (fast). By settling into this quieter season to reflect on the simple things, we give ourselves the opportunity to listen to the Lord as we prepare and await the joyful season that Easter will eventually bring.
